Question / Help Changing audio sync offset results in distorted/no audio -- Elgato Game Capture HD

Trying to set up an Elgato, doing the standard delay workarounds of delaying webcam and global audio to match the video delay of the Elgato capture, then reversing the Elgato audio delay to compensate. Video and global audio offset are set to about 1000ms, but things get weird when setting the negative audio sync offset on the Elgato. In Elgato Device Selection settings, if the audio sync offset is set to -600ms, everything is fine. If set to -650ms, audio from the capture device becomes really distorted. If set to -700ms on, capture audio disappears entirely.

Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Elgato software, the numbers seem fairly consistent as to where they cause an issue. Any insight would be awesome, thank you!

I've also noticed that the audio sync offset is only applied if audio is sent only to stream, and does not work if audio is sent to desktop instead. Is this by design?
