Question / Help Capturing from dodgy card: Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle. Might be a simple answer

Hi everyone

I'm using a BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle to capture from a game using RCA cables. From there, I will be using the output of the device to go into a tv, and capture from a windows laptop for live streaming.

When using this device with OBS, it can work fine unless I change scene. I think this is because changing scenes stops the shuttle from being used as a device.

If the device isn't being used, then it stops giving an output to the TV too, which is a huge problem for what I'm trying to accomplish.

My question is, is there software I can use as a middleman here? Is there software which can be in charge of capturing the device video and audio, which can then be sent to OBS? This would prevent problems with switching scenes.

I'm basically having the same problem this guy was having, but for Windows instead. They recommended they use Black Syphon as the middleman. I'm kind of looking for similar software but for Windows.

OBS Studio does NOT actually disable the source when you change scenes.

What type of source are you adding the intensity as?

Thanks for your response.

I'm adding it as a Video Capture device. If I were to have multiple scenes set up, switching them would cause the device to shut off (and therefore stop exporting video to the tv too)

Switching scenes causes errors, and I can't say why. I've had to make do with just one scene, but this isn't really what I want. Just changing the properties of it can cause it to shut off too. This can be a problem, as the output from the device will be used by people playing a competitive game.

The capture device can't be sent to multiple programs at once, this might be related to the problem. For example, if I was to use a preview of the device in BlackMagic Media Express, I could not use it as a source in OBS at the same time.

A crazy idea I had for a solution was to use two instances of OBS. One could be used to capture from the device, and then stream that footage to another instance, which can be used to control the overlays.
Another idea would be to have a scene itself as a source, rather than reconfiguring the video each scene(which is breaking it)

Thanks, I haven't actually used OBS Studio, only classic before.
I actually got around the problem to an extent on OBS by using a Global Source for video capture. This allows scene switching no problem.
However, there've been problems in the past where the device would shut off again if the internet connection is dropped, as OBS would no longer be rendering. This is why I would have preferred to use an external middle man.
If OBS studio can do this no problem then great! Going to try it out now.

Studio does seem to be the better program! It looks like I got OBS all working, except if the internet goes down the output would be cut off.

However there is a problem with the quality of the video recieved.
There doesn't seem to be any deinterlacing (I'm using a 480i input, gamecube running Super Smash Bros Melee)
On open broadcaster software I would use the Linear deinterlacing setting and I would get a good quality picture. There doesn't seem to be an option for this in OBS Studio. Is there an equivalent?

OK thanks, until then I'll stick with OBS using global sources.
I had never even heard of OBS studio until your recommendation. Thanks for your help!

I hate to bring up an old thread, but I have a very similar set up, but with ps4. I was originally using the Video Capture Device setting to capture my console output but a viewer said the a/v was out of sync. I disabled and fiddled with it and then couldnt get it working again. on Video capture device I couldnt get video to come through via the blackmagic video output settings so I had to manually set the video settings. Having sorted that I was no longer getting any audio being captured from the capture device.
If I set it up via the Blackmagic device option instead I can set the video up more easily but am still getting absolutely no audio. It was playing audio originally.

I often had audio desync isses on old OBS but there were audio settings to tweak there. there seem to be none on studio. Any insight? I am always having some issue with this card haha!

You haven't looked in to the mixer's settings.
Click the gear next to the word mixer in the main window.
