Capture Video Device - not showing my device

Using a Sony Digital Walkman Hi 8 video camera- running from the DV port firewire cable plugged into an firewire adaptor and then connect to thunderbolt 3 into a Mac Studio port. Does not recognize the video Walkman for some reason. What am I doing wrong? Does it need a capture card?
