Question / Help Can't find AAC codec settings

obs newbie

Hi Everyone,

I'm very new to OBS and has used Adobe Flash Live Media Encoder (but not extensively).

My client wants his stream to have the following codecs:
Video: VP6
Audio: AAC

I've searched OBS and clicked everything in the menu but can't find the drop down list to choose codecs. Please help.

Thank you! God bless!

Thank you very much!

What is the default video codec? Can I change it to h.264? Is there switch somewhere to choose from several video codecs?

The default is h.264 with every encoder available in OBS.

If you need that level of control over the resulting video, you will likely need to use custom FFmpeg output in Advanced output mode for recordings.

Thanks Fenrir :)

But the client wants these settings for streaming, not recording. Are there codec options for streaming?

By the way, how do I put ffmpeg in my obs for recording? I clicked on the Recording tab (in Advanced output mode) and I only saw three options: nvenc h.264, quicksync h.246, and x264.

OBS only outputs RTMP for streaming by default, which requires the flv container to be used. Format support there is very limited.

Custom FFmpeg output can be used to output to a URL as well. Change the drop down from Standard to Custom ffmpeg output in the recording tab for Advanced output.

Thanks Fenrir!

Is RTMP a codec? Will my audience be able to view the stream using iPad, iphone, and Mac laptops?

God bless!

RTMP is a streaming protocol. And support for playback is determined by whatever service you're using. You can't stream directly from OBS to a mobile device, you need some kind of server in the middle. You're probably best off leveraging something like YouTube streaming than trying to do this on your own with the limited knowledge you have.

Thanks Fenrir :) You are right, I have limited knowledge on this. However, I have no choice but to learn these as much as I can quickly. I stream to a client's platform with a URL and stream key. (It would be great if I can just stream to Youtube. I tried it and it was so much easier... and fun, too)

I've done streaming a couple of times before with Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder with good results with my desktop and Matrox MXO2 mini. However, problem started when I switched to my ROG gaming laptop (for easy transport) and Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle for USB 3.0. The Blackmagic always disconnects when running FMLE. Then I tried OBS everything just worked out great! No more disconnecting. Will never go back to FLME again. I would also like to sell the Blackmagic and buy a Magewell. But I have to make this current setup work for now as Magewell is not currently available in my country.
