Sorry for bumping an old thread. But I feel for anyone who may be googling this issue, it may be helpful.
1) You can get Sony Vegas Pro 12 to support variable frame rate MP4's. You just have to disable the compoundplug.dll so that it defaults to the mp4plug.
2) The above step I listed is a work around, personally I've found success in removing that green screen error that Sony Vegas horks up by simply enabling the CFR like suggested in this thread.
3) You can always open up your video file and rerecord it using monitor capture. That will allow you to edit it in Sony Vegas.
