Cannot use OBS 28.1 or newer because of critical GPU overload

Hello!

I record at 4k60. It works fine on OBS 28.0.3 and earlier, but ever since 28.1 I get massive stuttering issues. Same hardware and same settings (High Quality, Medium File Size preset | NVENC h.264). I believe OBS 28.1 made some big changes, but surely it shouldn't have degraded my performance this much? What am I missing?

I'm having to use 28.0.3. Don't want to have to use it forever. Thanks for any assistance!

Preset is too high, P5 is recommended but still may be too slow for 60FPS. My 3090's encoder is roughly 55-60% utilized when encoding 2160p @ 30FPS.

Nvidia driver may also be causing issues but I wouldn't know for sure since I'm still using 522.30.

What is your F drive, rust or SSD?

I got some help on the Discord and indeed it seems like the "Simple" presets in 28.1+ are much higher than previously and can cause significant issues at 2160p. I am playing around with some "Advanced" preset options now. Looks like I'll have to use P4 with PQ 23 or so. Thanks for the assistance!

Yes, all drives are SSDs in this system. F is a SATA SSD.

I haven't, I use a Fit-Headless GS as my 4k monitor & since Nvidia limits the HDMI outputs to 30FPS I encode the same. Try P4, if it still lags go to P3. If you enable Multipass, it should be set to qres.

I think P4 will be good. It was good in a ~4 minute test recording which is very promising. I wanna make sure it's good for longer as some other settings have started fine and then degraded into a stuttering mess after about 90s-120s. Thanks for the help!
