Cannot record unless (use stream encoder)

For some reason if I chose any option other than (use stream encoder) then my recordings do not playback and are blank, but show a correct thumbnail
If I choose (use stream encoder) then my recordings playback fine, but this means I cannot increase the quality of recording above that of the stream output.
Even if i duplicate the stream encoder settings to the recoding page it still will not work, I HAVE to have the option (use stream encoder) enabled.

What am I doing wrong?

With some more fiddling, I got recording encoding working with x264, but every other format still outputs unplayable blank video. I'd prefer to use a different one if possible, so still hoping you found a fix.
