Question / Help Cannot capture The Sims 1 or Age of Empires II with OBS

Hello Everyone,

I cannot capture either of my two favorite PC video games using any OBS version because neither of these games show up as options in Game Capture.
None of the other methods to capture PC-based game AV work at all (including monitor capture) and I just receive a black screen when I try a monitor capture.

I was wondering why it isn't possible to capture The Sims 1 or Age of Empires II even with anti-cheat hooks, and I've already tired all the options available, and was also wondering what I could do that would make it possible to record these PC games.

Both of those games include older versions of DirectX and it would follow that they use whatever version of DirectX is installed on my laptop (which I believe is version 11).
I thought that OBS would be able to capture DirectX-using games, or am I thinking of some other Microsoft video gaming technology that these older games and OBS use differently (and are thus incompatible)?

It seems to be possible because there are countless Let's Plays and videos of the Sims 1 and Age of Empires II, but I don't know how they were able to record their games when I cannot.

Thanks for your help!

That isn't how DirectX works. Even if you have DX11 installed, if a game was coded using DX7, it will not use DX11... it'll still be running as a DX7 application.

OBS can only capture DX9 or newer games (and some DX8, but it's unreliable). The Sims uses DX7.
Age of Empires II I can't even find a listing regarding, but did find information about the AoE2:HD re-release on Steam having a more up-to-date implementation; it should be capturable.

Only hope for Sims 1 is to play in windowed mode if possible. OBS won't otherwise be able to capture it.
