If you're just going to use NVENC for recording, throw a high bitrate at it. That's it.

But if i want to use x264

x264 is a software encoder that runs on your CPU. You can't run it on your GTX 970. The guide I linked above shows how to configure x264 properly for local recording.

A hardware encoder like NVENC should have the smallest performance impact.
