Hello, I am new to OBS. I am wondering if OBS would be a good software option for recording movies. I am a Frontier Communications customer for my cable and internet. I am trying to figure out the best way to record movies and shows to my computer hard drive so I can then copy them to a portable hard drive or memory stick to be used on my smart TV at my cabin, where I don't have cable. The shows are generally about one hour long and the movies are generally about 2 hours long. Does anyone know if OBS would work for what I'm wanting to do, or if there might be a better solution? Thanks, Greg

If you are able to watch the show in full screen on your computer, then obs can record the audio and video for said movie. That being said, if you are trying to record from the cable box via HDMI, you will need to use a capture device. From my experience, all DVRs I have had contact with have had HDCP preventing me from recording via HDMI. Some splitters can be used to remove the HDCP from the signal allowing you to record the HDMI output from the DVR.

Example of capture device.

Overall, unless you can watch the DVR on your pc already, OBS can not record it without already having access to the signal. This will be the same problem for any other software you may try as well.

I hope this has helped you.

I have a DVR that comes with Frontier Communications. Do you think there might be a way to record from my DVR to a portable hard drive? Thanks.

Unlikely. Even if your DVR allows you to use an external USB storage device, that content would almost certainly only play back from that drive when connected to the DVR-- you wouldn't be able to read it from a PC.

I imagine it is possible, though, that your DVR might continue to function at least enough for local playback even if moved away from your cable connection, but this is speculation on my part.

If you wanted to use a PC as a DVR for your cable connection, you could use a combination of software like Plex combined with a hardware cablecard tuner like an HDHomerun. Then your PC could play back recordings even when not connected to your cable tuner.

Going to lock further discussion on this thread as this kind of thing is almost certainly illegal in the US, where Frontier operates.
