Hey! I'm buying a new laptop next month, and I want to use it mostly to stream with OBS, but I don't know if I could stream with it (probably is a stupid question, but I am a noob with these things :().
  • Procesador Intel Core i5 4ª Gen 5200U / 2.2 GHz / 3 MB Caché
  • RAM 4 GB DDR3L 1600 MHz
  • 500 GB (5400 rpm S-ATA)
  • Almacenamiento óptico Super Multi Dual Layer (S-ATA)
  • Display 15.6" LED HD (1366 x 768) 16:9 Gloss
  • Controlador gráfico Intel HD Graphics 5500
  • Windows 8.1 64bit

laptops, not a good idea to use for a stream.

Reason 1. weak CPU, OBS encodes primarily on the CPU with software encoding which can achieve the best quality. laptops often have low power, low MHz, limited in cores. It is recommended to use a desktop with at least 4 theads for minimum quality. the more threads (and the higher the MHz) the better you can achieve quality-wise.

Reason 2. wireless, often people think it is a good idea to stream over wireless. This has never been the case. streaming is reliant on a steady high speed internet connection which wireless can almost never sustain even if your wireless is way above the streaming bitrate. wireless also is split between every other wireless device you have connected so you are essentially waiting on other devices to "beacon" before your transmission can be sent. use a wired connection

Reason 3. non expandable. laptops more often than not cannot be upgraded or when they are, are limited to just RAM or harddrive upgrades. unless you want to buy a new laptop to get better streaming quality there really isn't any great reason to stream on a laptop besides cost.

Reason 4. switchable or dual graphics often called optimus with nvidia, switchable graphics is difficult (almost impossible) for a streamer those wanting to display their desktop and game capture in the same session. Just like it sounds, when on your desktop, you are utilizing the onboard intel iGPU, then when you get in game, it switches to the dedicated GPU. this is a problem when OBS needs to find out where the video is coming from. this is also the case with expensive dual GPU laptops as OBS (the original) has issues with capturing from both GPUs which will also cause performance issues. use a desktop with a single GPU setup. if you end up with dual GPUs in SLI or crossfire OBS Multiplatform has a game capture option for this mode which will aid in this.
