Question / Help Can I stream with good quality?

Hi
I have read the sticky, unfortunately it did not help me.
Anyway, I have an i3 2120 and I have tried to stream at 720p and 1080p 30fps, but I get an enormous amount of dropped frames and an overall slow PC.
I tested my stream using Dota, because I thought that the game is not demanding in the way of CPU.
I looked at the resource monitor and found that I was only using about 60-80% of my CPU, which I thought was low while streaming.
Is there anything that I can change in my OBS settings to make the stream work, or will I have to upgrade my CPU?
Thanks

I3 is not strong enough for 720p and 1080p streams. Try 360p and 480p. You can get away with that and not have high CPU usage. 60-80% of CPU is a lot if you did not know.

Thanks, it seems that I will have to upgrade my CPU then.
Is an i5 future proof still or should I get the i7 instead?
I don't want to buy an i5 and find that it will be useless in 6 months :/
Thanks

As long as you get a 4th Gen quad core at least, you should be fine, either i5 or i7 it really doesn't matter, if you want to be really future proof, get a hexa core i7, but they're expensive.

As a general rule avoid 1080 at all costs while streaming, unless your viewers are going to watch on a 1080 monitor with the stream fullscreened, the 50% extra pixels that 1080 uses end up getting downscaled out. So as an end result, it costs more resources and looks worse than 720

Is 3rd gen quad core alright?
My CPU socket is 1155, so I cannot get a 4th gen CPU

3rd gen would be fine, but make sure the CPU has 4 physical cores, the main reason I recommend 4th Gen over 3rd is that 4th gens can perform more calculations per cycle then the 3rd gens, so same clock speed and cores, 4th Gen outperforms 3rd by quite a bit.

With 3rd gen I'd look for 4 cores with 3.0 minimum clock

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...6&cm_re=xeon_e3_1230v2-_-19-117-286-_-Product

buy this instead ... hyperthreaded quadcore so basically a i7 without the "k" (unlocked multi) feature only downside is that if you ever plan on using qsv it is not available on this xeon

another option would be to stream with qsv right now since you are running a 3d gen i3 the qsv performance should be okay
Hi and thanks for replying :)
Is the Xeon future proof? I want to get a CPU that will last for at least a couple of years. With the i5 I can just OC it and so make it last a little longer.
Also, I don't really plan to use QSV because I have a GTX 660.
Thanks

ocing doesnt mean its future proof ... actually running an i7 based cpu with 8 threads will by far be better in the future than an oced i5 no matter what

if you want future proof you would have to invest a lot more money to lets say ... be on the good side for atleast 5 years but im actually quite sure that this xeon will last long enough
