Question / Help Can I recover a anything useable after recording error?

I just had an "unspecified" or "unexpected" error (I was too flustered to read too closely) cut off an hour and a half of recording. I think the error was a result of Windows deciding it wanted to shut down without warning. No fault of OBS in that case.

I had originally assumed that everything was lost, but there is a video file left behind. It's a pretty sizeable one too -- except no programs will open it. So my question is this: Is there any way to recover even part of what I was recording before the error, given the OBS seems to have written something to a file?

The data after the error is lost and not recorded, but all that were written to file before the error occur is possible to recover (hard, but possible). Would you like to know more?

Still hoping for a solution here, but in the meantime...
With you saving directly to mp4, no there is nothing you can recover that is usable.
Is there a different format I should be recording in so that I don't lose everything if OBS encounters an error again?

Both are correct. Once you discover how to recover the data, you'll side with Harold more, ha ha. I've looked into recovery myself. Luckily I didn't have anything real serious that needed to be recovered, and just made another video. And I still record to MP4.
