Can I record just an audio recording and share;

Hi,
I am new to OBS software, so please be patient if this has already been answered somewhere; I have a mixer going straight into my laptop soundcard and I have already recorded video with audio, which saved as a .mkv file extension; Does anyone know how to just record the audio and then save the file as an audio file, so I can post to one of the Cloud services, that allow you to throw a DJ mix up there;

Many thanks for your help.

Normally you'd want to use an audio-only recording software for that, like Audacity. It would also let you control when the recording starts and stops independently of OBS.
You can also use a video editor (like DaVinci Resolve) to export the audio track separately.

Failing that, there's also the Audio Writer Filter, but it will output constantly... you'll have to trim the output later for an upload (CoreAudio AAC STRONGLY recommended, for file sizes):

Hi FerretBomb,

Many thanks for your help; The software you are talking about, is this free software that I can download or is a payment involved. I downloaded a recording audio Software trial of Wave Pad by NCH, but the trial has now ran out, so would have to purchase if I want to continue to use... thanks again for your advice.

Hello again,

I managed to take your advice and downloaded the Audacity Software,, brilliant thanks so much for this, it recorded the music and I could then output to MP3 or WAV... I have another question for yourself or anyone who is here... if I wanted to take this one step further and DJ Some music, but wanted to Video the show... how do I start?

Well, you'd probably want a camera of some sort, if you mean actual video. That can be a big question, with a lot of answers depending on things like your venue's specifics (light levels, size) and your budget. Also if you just plan to run a local recording, or a livestream. Also what sort of gear you already have, to determine what you'd need.
You'd also need to consider what you want to show on-screen. Just video from cameras? A visualizer program of some sort? Include a direct audio feed from your mixing system? Do the DJ-specific licenses for your music cover broadcasted content, or only live venues under a certain size? Do you have mechanical, or synchronization licenses?

I'd recommend reading through the OBS Quickstart Guide, and watching some video tutorials like the Nerd or Die OBS Tutorial Series. They'll get you going with the basics of OBS.

Many thanks for your feedback, you seem very experienced in this type of thing; I saw a video relating to going live via Mix-Cloud and using OBS STUDIO to achieve this, so I know that this is one possibility, using the laptop's built in camera. However, I have also see on YouTube people who have used their Cam-Corder to record/stream live into their laptops.... And because the camera has better video quality, is there anyway to use my Canon Camcorder to record the DJ set, I am assuming Audacity Software only records Audio, but may have to do the full recording in OBS.. Thanks.

If your camcorder has a 'clean' live video-out of some kind (does not show the informational display) then you can buy a capture device, like the Elgato Camlink (for HDMI). Camcorders and DSLRs generally can't be plugged in via USB and act like webcams; if they have a USB port, normally they're for charging or treating the cam like a thumbdrive, to transfer files to the PC from internal storage.

Excellent, I have a firewire cable coming from the out port on the Cam-corder and even bought a firewire/USB convertor to plug straight into a USB port on the laptop, but I am not sure how to transfer the live video... I may have opened a can of worms... But I do know that when I have used OBS, it picks up the build in camera on the laptop without any issues, so I may just stick to this for now.... May I ask, how does anyone else DJ live over the Internet; I signed up to Mix-Cloud and can post Audio files for free... However, to do a live stream to the account, I would have join the subscription service, but I know people have used OBS to achieve this.... I am new to all this streaming stuff, but just wanted to DJ some nice tunes over the Cloud... Many thanks for your help.
