Question / Help Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle to capture laptop HDMI output?

I'm planning to use OBS to stream our tech tutorial sessions. These usually involve demoing stuff on the presenters' laptops so I need to be able to capture their whole monitor as well as sound. I'm thinking about capturing from the presenter's HDMI port to BM Intensity Shuttle to our broadcasting computer. We're going with 720p maximum.

Are there any known problems with this kind of setup? Has anyone tried this? Or are there any alternatives to BMIS? (we're using laptops to stream so I guess capture cards are out of the question)

The BMI's should work, but just know that if you get a black screen out of a blackmagic it means that you don't have its resolution/fps set correctly in its device configuration (via the "configure" button in the source's properties). This is an issue with the blackmagic/decklink devices themselves specifically. Make sure that resolution/fps matches whatever you're capturing.

I have a blackmagic mini-recorder myself, blackmagic/decklink devices are just really picky about their settings otherwise they get a black screen.

Er, personally I recommend the XCAPTURE-1 instead, it's more reliable and more functional: http://www.solarisjapan.com/xcapture-1- ... ture-unit/

The BMIS is just a pain to work with, honestly.

In either case, make sure you have an Intel or Renesas USB 3.0 controller or else the device won't work at all.

Always get an internal device if you're on a desktop, hands down no questions asked.

If you -must- get a USB deivce, and you have USB 3.0 ports on your computer, absolutely get a USB 3.0 device. The xcapture-1 is inexpensive, does 1080p (I think 60fps too, it's pretty amazing) and works great with OBS. They're just as good as internal cards. Avermedia is also making one I believe.

My recommendation is unless you're on a computer that only has 2.0 ports, do not buy a USB 2.0 device.

If he only needs 720p, the Intensity Shuttle might be the better option. I have a very favorable opinion of the XCAPTURE-1, but it's roughly twice as expensive and I'm hesitant to recommend it to someone who may not have the need for its extra functionality.

The worst I can say about the Shuttle from experience is that it might take a while to find a driver version that works perfectly. I was having bluescreen problems on most of their recent updates and had to revert to 9.6.x to find one that didn't cause any problems on my setup.

can you help me to recorder from PC (i bought desklink mini recorder but i dont know how to setup, i got black screen)
