Bug Report [Blackmagic design shuttle intensity] sound stuttering

Hello everyone,

i'm new to this forum but i've been using OBS for a few month and i'd like to start my first topic by thanking the team behind this piece of software cause it solved most of my issues i had with x split, and i can stream ANY PC game at any visual settings without any trouble.

I have quite a "good" computer (I7 3770k, a nice crucial m4 ssd and so on) for streaming and i've got a blackmagic design intensity shuttle usb 3.0 (what a name <_<).

Iv'e read the "list of known issues" and i ve read that you've tried to fix the problem with sound since 0.48.010.

I wanted to say that for me at least the issue is still here, the sound is stuttering, i thought at first it was because i was asking the software to output audio to the desktop, but the same issue happens when output to stream only.

I've tried with a xbox360 on HDMI, and a PS3 on YUV component, same issue.

I don't know what i can give you (log or something) to help you solve this issue.

have you tried the "use buffering" option? it's basically designed to fix these sort of things -- though I haven't had adequate testing with blackmagic yet.

Just wanted to add that I too have this problem with the same devices. Since there is no download link to .48, only .50 and .51, I've tested with both those versions and have the same stuttering issue; thus I don't believe this was actually fixed as indicated by the stickied forum thread.

I've tried the buffering solution to no avail. No matter how large of a buffer I give the stream, I still get audio stutter. Aside from this issue plaguing my Blackmagic device, I have to admit that this software is crazy amazing and I hope you guys keep up the fantastic work!

I've attached a log of a very short stream which hopefully explains to you where the stutter is happening and why. Important things I'd like to note about this setup:

  • In the log, I preview the stream for a short time then broadcast the stream for a short time.
  • I'm streaming from my PS3 through a Blackmagic Shuttle via Component cable.
  • I hear a consistent stutter in the audio whether I am streaming the audio to my desktop or to the stream, whether it's in preview mode or not. Thus, it's not something on Twitch's end.
  • This stutter happens with and without a buffer on the stream.

If there's any further information you'd like, let me know. I'd really like to help you fix this issue as it seems to be the only real problem I'm having with OBS!

Hi guys,

I just wanted to say that this is not an OBS issue. I, too, own this device and found that it stutters EVERYWHERE except when using the Blackmagic Express software.

Haven't used the shuttle in ages... Gave up trying. :(

Shinblindrezo - I actually -really- appreciate that information because after the fixes I implemented I knew that something was up when the blackmagic still had weird issues even with buffering enabled. I really appreciate that verification.

Wow, you know what? I take back what I said! Just last month I was streaming Skate 3 over the PS3 via Shuttle just fine with no problems but I decided to go back and test it again and, welp, looks like the Shuttle don't like the PS3 anymore!

Apologies Jim. I'm going to figure out why the Shuttle stopped playing nice and get back to this thread with a solution.

Just for a quick confirmation, though. When you say to use the "buffering" option, are you talking about the buffering option under the Video section of the settings in the "Device Selection" window, or something else?

OK! I solved the issue! Anyone else with a Blackmagic Shuttle and a PS3, please confirm these settings.

The key settings are in the images but here's a list as well.
  • Set the PS3 to 720p (other resolutions probably work but I've tested too much for one day)
  • Set the video device to Decklink Video Capture not Blackmagic Shuttle! I think this is the key issue here. Make sure the settings match those in the screenshot. Right click the screenshot and open in new tab/window if it's too small, the forum resizes it.
  • Set the audio device to Decklink Audio Capture not Default or Device! Yet another probable key issue here. Again, make sure the settings match the screenshot.
  • Probably not an issue but juuuuust in case, ensure your control panel -> Blackmagic settings are correct for your input cable. I doubt the default actually matters here.

Sorry for making you waste any further time on this Jim. The drivers for the shuttle are just out of whack.

Colour me surprised. I know I had the correct settings before, but I could never get it to work. Then again, that was at least 2 months ago. Could be that the latest drivers might have resolved it. Either way, I have no need for the Shuttle so I won't even bother trying again...

Interesting to know though. Thanks. :)
