Black video file!

I just installed OSB. I am a newbie. I have video from my web cam showing on the preview screen, but the recorded videos are just black - no sound, no video. What am I missing?

As an old-timer, I log off daily (99.99999+% of the time, as in maybe a couple of times in last 10 years I haven't)
And I reboot regularly (I usually reboot personal system daily; work systems weekly ... as in shutdown over weekend)
If one uses OS Suspend/ Hibernate, my prior experience was more frequent reboots desirable, though certain newer systems _might_ be better...
