so when I go to use a source like display capture it just shows a black screen and I do not know how to fix it.

Assuming you're on a laptop, if you want to use Display Capture you have to set OBS to run on the iGPU. This disables Game and WIndow Capture, and should be avoided other than as an absolute last-resort.
