Question / Help Black Screen on Game Capture

I'm trying to stream Battle Chasers Nightwar on Steam, but the game capture source just comes up as a black screen. I've tried the game in both full screen and windowed mode and tinkered around with the game capture source, selecting both capture any full screen or specific window, so far, the game still comes up as black on OBS.
The only thing different is that while the game is black, I can still see the game cursor moving around when I move my mouse, but that's the only thing about the game that I can see.

I don't see an attempt for game capture to capture the game in that log. Can you verify that the game capture source is configured correctly (try capture specific window instead of any fullscreen, for instance) and then upload the current OBS log again?

Try this one. I was able to recreate the situation again.

Update on the situation. I just tried OBS on a different game, Cuphead in this case, and everything worked perfectly. This problem might be specific to Battle Chaser: Nightwar. Also, it might have something to do with BC:NW halting when its window isn't selected while Cuphead technically keeps going even when not the selected window on my PC.

Yes, I can confirm , the game capture does not work with BC:NW for me either, even though it's just a unity game.

Well, according to the logs here:

13:50:51.713: [game-capture: 'Game Capture'] attempting to hook process: BC.exe
13:50:51.726: [game-capture: 'Game Capture'] d3d11 shared texture capture successful
13:50:51.729: [game-capture: 'Game Capture'] shared texture capture successful

Capture worked just fine. Try clicking the source and press ctrl+r after you capture it. Other possibilities is that the game is intentionally breaking capture from working, but the hook from the OBS side appears to be working correctly.

Just tried it again and still, nothing happens, even with the ctrl+r thing done. Also ran another test on another test, Yooka-Laylee this time. The same black screen problem is present there as well.

I am not sure what to tell you at this point, according to the log the capture is succeeding just fine. There has to be something else going on here.

Can you screenshot the main OBS window with game capture selected in the sources list?

Hope this helps. For some reason, my print screen button decided to not work, so I had to use my phone. Hope everything is visible enough.

Yeah that's fine, just wanted to make sure that the bounding box wasn't doing something wonky (that's what the ctrl+r was intended to fix). I am still a bit stumped, let me see if I can do some research on my end and come up with something. If I can't figure anything out, I can always pick up the game and have 2 hours to test with before I can't refund it. :)

Actually, just as a test, can you move the game capture to the top of the sources list? Just click and drag it to the top, and see if it has the video show up then.

Sadly that doesn't do anything.
But here is another detail. As another test, I deleted the game capture source and then remade it, thinking that might do something, but now that red box that appears when I select the source doesn't show up. Instead, it blinks for an instant and then vanished, and then repeats.

I got it to work! I was struggling too, then I tried windowed mode and selecting the source as if it was a browser window. That actually worked for me.

Oooooooo
Could you write down the specific steps of what you do? If it worked for you, I wanna try and pull it off. Having a little trouble myself.

Take the game out of Fullscreen, then use a Window Capture instead of Game Capture as your source. Worked for me.

Window capture uses a different capture method, but should be fine to use as a workaround in the meantime (or display capture if you want to stay fullscreen still).

Still checking in to this.

I just did the display capture and did a test recording. Yeah, this is the best kind of workaround. Was able to stream perfectly.

Thanks everyone for all your help!

Capturing the game works fine ONLY if you boot it in its safe mode option (DX9). If you play it on default options it just shows a black screen - i assume its using some dx12 features as stuff like The Division doesn't work either as long as you use DX12.

DX12 capture works fine with The Division, I know first hand as I've done it. However, it's been awhile since I've played, so they might have updated that broke some aspect of the capture. In general, though, DX12 game capture should work fine.

Did you try to make some changes with Config file?

Do as follows:

  1. Open the File Location(C:\Users\???\Documents\My Games\Tom Clancy’s The Division)
  2. Find GFXSettings.Rogue_x64.xml
  3. Right Click and press Edit Scroll until you find the Resolution
  4. Set Custom Height and Width(your Resolution)
  5. Save and Start the Game.
Hope it fixes your issue, there are other solutions too for fixing black screen in Tom Clancy’s The Division if this doesn't work for you.
