Base and Output resolution question

Hello!

I just setup my Elgato 4k Pro M2 and I'm a bit confused on how to set up my settings.

I'm on a 1440p monitor and I game on my PC at 1440p and have a 5080 GPU. For that, I assume Base and Output resolution at 1440p makes sense at 60fps.

However, I hooked up my 4k pro to my PC (and my 1440p monitor) in order to record Switch 2 gameplay. The Switch 2 runs some games and 1080p I think and others at 1440p but sometimes there's some upscaling going on as well? I'm not sure if I should keep my Base and Output at 1440p or what I should do to make the settings right as it's not as black and white as PC.

Can someone help me understand what settings I should do and why? Thanks so much!

For most things, you want the highest quality possible, which is 1440p. This is especially true now that you can easily stream 1440p to Twitch and YouTube. So your settings are good.

The capture card can cause issues where it doesn't display or process the feed correctly, and this is what you need to sort out. I would advise connecting it in passthrough mode for the lowest latency. Since that card supports up to 4K60, it will support 1440p 120, which is what I would target if the switch allows that high frame rate. Otherwise, go for the highest possible.

It hops between resolutions because of EDID handshake conflicts. In the Elgato 4K capture, set it to an internal fixed resolution of 1080p and resize in OBS, or if you have Switch 2, set it to 1440p. Also, on the Switch, set it to 1080p rather than leaving it on automatic in TV settings. Lastly, in OBS, you can change from the device default to 1080p (or 1440p for switch 2).

One last thing, whenever you change things on your capture card because it's built-in, it really helps to restart the pc for things to apply, since it's a pcie card rather than USB.

Okay I went ahead and locked the Switch 2 down to 1440p and now all of my settings as well as my games on PC and Switch 2 are set to 1440p (I don’t have a switch 1). Also, I checked Smash bros last night and I think that game runs at 1080p but when I checked the output resolution it was showing it was outputting 1440p so that’s a bit confusing.
