Question / Help Balck screen in Game record mode please help

HI, I am trying to record some game capture footage to demonstrate the capabilities of a machine I am selling.

I have read through the help contents on OBS software and adjusted the settings accordiingly.

I need to capture to file.

The problem is that the recordings are only capturing audio and a black screen.

The game is crysis warhead.

Win 8.1

Geforce GTX 275

Dual monitor, although when gaming always just use one.

Any guidance here please?

I can record video and audio under the monitor setting but the output is so jerky etc its no good.

I understood that game capture is the best for win 8.1 for decent results...

You should be able to normally, but what it says is that you have insufficient memory -- possibly insufficient video memory to perform the capture. That card is admittedly really low end, but you seem to have a fair amount of memory so that doesn't really make sense. What game are you capturing?

You can also use window capture, window capture on windows 8+ is as good as game capture but you have to run the game in a borderless of windowed mode

Where does it show insufficient memory in the log please?

I looked through it but failed to find any error messages..

The game is crysis warhead.

Also keep in mind that your stream is going to tank with your current settings regardless of the capture method. You need to downscale a lot and will probably need to switch to a less demanding preset as well.

I see..
I can capture successfully in window mode as suggested but also as you say the results are rubbish..

I have the game set to gamer settings at 1280x1024, fullscreen off

Do you mean game settings or OBS software settings?

the capture results are rotten at the moment..

Do I need to drop OBS capture frame rate?
Increase/decrease change CBR bitrate?

I saw a warning mid capture "WARNING: Encoding is taking too long.."





What settings would you advise me to change

Every time I stream I need to alt tab out of the game and update the game capture so it detects the game properly. For some reason it doesn't do this automatically.

So try that.

Also I have just used FRAPS and the 30secs recording in game comes out perfect..

It's only 30 secs which is not enough, but it really is an accurate rtepresentaion of game play..

In which case it would appear that I don't have any system issue that prevents me capturing in-game effectively?

Just not with OBS at the moment..

I am waiting for JIM and SAPIENS to further advise.

You weren't using window capture in that log. It was still game capture.

Yes, same advice, try window capture instead of game capture, with the game in a borderless/windowed mode. Window capture cannot get that same error so your statement about getting the same error is incorrect

Do you mean game settings or OBS software settings?

the capture results are rotten at the moment..

Do I need to drop OBS capture frame rate?
Increase/decrease change CBR bitrate?

I saw a warning mid capture "WARNING: Encoding is taking too long.."""

Any more useful advise please?

Post your log again from a new session. The "results" are identical to game capture, the quality is identical for window/game capture. There is literally no difference between the two in terms of appearance, the only difference between the two is performance.

My goal was to produce some quality in-game captured video to reflect the performance of a system I am selling..

As far as this forum goes and the OBS software, to be honest I think I'll leave it.

Trying to get some timely useful help on this forum has been a bit like pulling teeth, and I have honestly no more time to waste.

I appreciate contributions are voluntary, but even so, pointing out problems without following up with timely, constructive advice is really just a waste of any enquirers time.

For any other person who happens across this thread (if it is not deleted..) I would strongly recommend FRAPS as a simple and highly effective method of capturing quality in-game footage.

In the free version you are limited to 30secs only, but even so for me a compilation of these 30 sec clips works very as it shows a range of different points in the game.

@JIM you were kind enough to tell me how "extremely low end" my graphics card was in your first communicated response. Please feel free to view the end result of what I managed to produce using FRAPS and my.... "extremely low end card"

Incidentally, I have opened your OBS software today and it's now in French.? Having been English yesterday..

C'est magnifique..

Luckily my french is not to bad, it seems in order to change the language back to English the user has to "redemarrage de OBS."

and then there is a lovely little line underneath this which states

"...Mais je suppose que si vous changez le language vous ne comprendrez pas ca"

Redamarrage = reboot

The other line I believe means something like ""but I guess if you changed the language you will not understand this..""

Personally I will not be rebooting, more removing.

I will not be visiting here again but i would hope that you are able to take this polite crtisim and use it constructively.

I will not be surprised if this is deleted.

Game video quality has nothing to do with video card quality. OBS makes heavy use of the GPU for compositing, which needs fast VRAM, which GT 2xx-series cards don't have. So you may be able to play games just fine, but to do the more sophisticated compositing and capturing that OBS does, you need a better GPU for good performance.
