Question / Help Bad in-game performance with some games (CS:GO)

Hi. I'm having issues trying to record or stream CS:GO. Whenever I open the recording software, the game starts running extremely poorly. Strangely enough, I don't get a drop in FPS (the game still runs at a steady 300+ FPS) but moving and looking around turns it into a laggy and choppy mess. This happens even when I'm not recording or streaming but just have OBS open with CS:GO running. The resulting stream or recording runs perfectly smooth, but the game itself becomes borderline unplayable.

I doubt it has much to do with my PC's specs (i7 7700k, GTX 1080, 16GB of RAM) as I manage to stream and record all of my other games (some of which are more demanding than CS, such as BF1 or DOOM 2016 at high settings) without any of these effects. Playing and streaming CS:GO, I still have ample room/power to spare in my GPU, CPU and memory (none of which break 45% usage even when recording, streaming and playing simultaneously).

I have already tried to mess around with my OBS settings and turned my in-game graphics all the way down without any major effect. Google shows I'm not the only one with the problem, but none of the supposed quick fixes have done much for me. It does not happen with any of my other games and I'm dumbfounded as to why this is the case now. Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like the typical 144Hz + 60Hz Monitor problem under Windows 10, although I have no information about your Monitor Setup.

Hey, that might actually be what's messing up here. I do have a 144hz monitor (Asus VG248QE) that I use for gaming as well as a 60hz one (LG 29UM68-P). The second one can run at 75hz with a DVI or DisplayPort cable though, so I will give that a try tonight.

If this is the issue, is there a fix for it? I'll also try disconnecting my second monitor and see if I still get the same issues with OBS and CS:GO on just one screen (the 144hz one). Thanks!

From what I heard (I only have 2x 60Hz Monitors) the problem can be avoided by using exclusive fullscreen mode for the game and not using GPU accelerated windows on the 60Hz monitor...so you can try to minimize OBS or disable the OBS preview and don't open videos/youtube/twitch on the 60Hz monitor or disable hardware acceleration in you webbrowser first.

Thanks, I'll check that out when I get home. I don't think it'll matter though. I'm pretty sure it persists even with OBS minimized.

Hey man, just wanted to let you know that you were absolutely right. As long as I have OBS open on my second monitor (the 60hz one), the game runs very poorly. However, the second I move it over to my other one and minimize it (having it hidden by the game) everything runs smoothly again. Thanks a lot, I asked this question on Reddit and Tom's Hardware too and no one else was able to help me. Much appreciated, although I'm stumped as to why this happens and how it could be fixed while still having OBS on screen #2.
