Audio skipping/clicking when streaming 256KBPS on iMac?

So I'm using OBS Studio and trying to stream to YouTube an online radio show.

I'm trying to stream the online radio @ 256KBPS. The OBS recommended settings for my iMac are 160KBPS.

I lowered the bitrate of my video since it's just a still image, so figured I could get away with raising the quality of the audio. I didn't think audio would make that much of a difference.

It's fine for the first 5 mins, but after 5 mins I start getting this weird clicking/distortion, some sort of skipping in the audio.

Weird part is after I end the stream and listen back to the video that was uploaded, the clicking is no longer there. It's only when streaming live. I have DVR option turned on.

My iMac settings are:

3.1Ghz Quad Core I5
8GB 1867MHz DDR3 Memory
Intel Iris Pro 6200 1536MB graphics

I changed the Recording Quality to "same as stream" because...

"Recording with a software encoder at a different quality than the stream will require extra CPU usage if you stream and record at the same time"

So I selected same quality as stream which was 256KPBS. This seemed to work great for ten minutes, and then it started skipping in the audio every three seconds again. Updated log files start at 00:57:19.740

Number of lagged frames due to rendering lag/stalls: 5328 (14.5%)

I did something that seems to have solved the problem.

It still won't let me stream at 256KBPS, but I changed the audio from 48 kHz to 44.1, and I was able to stream for a whopping 44 minutes with no interruptions, skipping, lagging @ 160KBPS. Even at 44.1 it still lags at 256 after ten minutes.

So this is the setting I will use with a late 2015 iMac running Catalina. It actually doesn't sound bad at all.

Nice job troubleshooting, and thanks for posting updates on your progress – a great help for anyone coming by the forums with the same problem in the future.

Given changing the bitrate had an effect, are you able to check what bitrate your audio inputs are? These settings could be in the OBS, macOS, or on the device itself.

What happens at the 44 minute mark? Or was that just when your testing ended? If its the latter then ignore all the above.
