Question / Help Audio Not Capturing

My desktop audio is no longer capturing in OBS, but the sound is still coming through my speakers. It was working last night, and this morning it has no longer been able to capture audio. I have everything set to default, and my default is producing sounds according to my Sound Settings. I changed NOTHING, no added mic/speaker/headset/setting, from last night to this morning - it simply isn't capturing sound any longer.

Things I have tried:

Resetting default audio settings
Resetting default output settings
Uninstalled / reinstalled OBS Studio
Deleted all settings to set OBS back to default
Restarted computer (2x)
Checked on YT for audio fixes (none worked)

Not sure what else to do at this point. New at OBS and computers in general - any suggestions are appreciated.

No output session in the log, so no performance data.

Please make sure to:

Open the app
Start a streaming or recording session
Wait long enough to observe the problem you are experiencing
Stop the recording or streaming session
Then upload the current log.

That said:

Check Edit > Advanced Audio Properties to see what Track(s) your audio sources/devices are assigned to, and check that your source is set to either "output" or "monitor and output"-- if it is set to "monitor only" you will hear the source but it will not be streamed or recorded.

Check Settings > Output > Streaming to see which audio track is being streamed (or Output>Recording to see which track(s) are being recorded

Sorry, I had just re-installed the program so of course there wasn't anything there. Here is a new log. I tried both of those : The advanced audio properties include "Track 1" and "Monitor and output", and the recording output is set to "Track 1" as well. Neither seem to be the problem as there is still no audio being picked up by OBS.

And this is your Windows default audio output?

05:25:54.250: WASAPI: Device 'Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)' initialized

Okay. So when you have audio going to that device, and you have that device selected as an input, either in Settings > Audio or as an explicit source, when audio plays, you see no activity on the meters?

I would try disabling all devices in Settings > Audio, and then explicitly adding an audio source to a scene, and doublechecking that the device you've added as an input is where your program is sending its audio (some just send to default and have no options, others, like VLC, can direct audio it's playing to any available device).

Okay, I am an idiot so please bear with me -

I have disabled all audio devices by going to Settings > Audio > Desktop Audio Device > Disabled
Then I checked my Sound playback again and it is the Realtek High Definition Audio (just to be sure)
Then went to Sources > Add > Audio Input/Output (I tried both) Capture > Realtek High Definition Audio

Still no activity on my meters - but I am hearing audio from the speakers themselves, so there is definitely sound coming from that source.

I'm at a loss here. There's no error in the log indicating OBS is having trouble accessing the audio device. OS updates sometimes add security features that require giving permission to apps to access cameras and microphones, but when these fail, usually it is logged as an error.

Does it make a difference if you run OBS as admin?

"Fix"??

I kept my Settings > Audio > Desktop Audio Device > Disabled
Shut down OBS for several hours with the computer still running
Restarted the computer without starting OBS again
Went back into Settings > Audio > Desktop Audio Device > Enabled
Meter started working, ran testing recordings and it is working.

No idea how/why it stopped or how/why it started working again. Maybe I messed up some tracks/audio setting and it needed a full audio restart? Thank you for working on this, I wish I knew why it stopped/started. I'll upload a log of the working audio recording to see if this helps anyone in anyway.
