Question / Help artifacts/low quality audio when using downmix to mono checkbox

When I use the "downmix to mono" checkbox in advanced audio properties, I get low quality audio and some accompanying artifacts. However, when I change Settings > Audio > Channels to Mono instead of using the downmix option, the audio quality is unchanged.

I do not run into this on Mac. Only on Windows so far. Anyone else run into this?

I sometimes do screen capture videos with music software, and I'll talk through the steps I take to do something in realtime. I want the music to stay in stereo (which goes through "desktop audio"), but my voiceover to be centered, so I put it in mono. I have a 4-in-4-out interface that I plug my mics into, and if I didn't downmix my voice, it would only sound on the left (since I am using channel 1 of the interface).

My setup does not change between Mac and Windows, as it is the same machine. I have 2 mics plugged into my interface, but I only turn the gain up on the 1st channel in this situation. The 2nd channel has the gain all the way down, but is not muted in any system settings.

The main thing that puzzles me is why I get a different result with the same setup depending on whether I am on Mac or Windows OBS.
