Question / Help Are my PC SPECS low?

Hi all,

I am fairly new to OBS and have a PC I used to use for gaming years ago (was decent in its day).
Below are the specs and I was wondering if I need to upgrade certain things or replace the whole thing.

I have set up the Elgato HD 60 and getting my footage from the PS4 and webcam, however the game footage isnt smooth and freezes every other second.

I have only just started playing with it so not sure if its a settings issue or hardware.

Hope someone can let me know if this is suffice or if I should upgrade.

Sorry for bump but really not sure if my system is causing the freezing or the settings I have on OBS.

If someone could point out any immediate system issues it would be greatly appreciated.

yes, your system is really weak.

you might get away with recording 540p30 on ultrafast (could try 720p30) but thats about it imho.


but i'd still like to see a logfile maybe you messed up some settings

I had a suspicion my system was weak. I have funds to replace the whole system tbh with a budget of about £1000, however I was wanting to invest in a laptop for portability. Should I stay clear of a laptop if I plan on recording and streaming? or has the hardware improved enough for me to be safe with a laptop? I will dump a log file at my earliest opportunity. Also if I get a new desktop system is there anything worth salvaging?

Its always better to build a custom gaming/streaming desktop

Salvage: Hard Drive(Seagate Barracuda), PSU(Corsair TX), CPU Cooler(Akasa AK-967) <- if it still works depending the cpu chipset socket
Everything else won't work on a new current build

As for the 5770, only keep it if you are not gaming with it for streaming - its already weak(I own 2 of them, so I know) - but you can still use it if you want - like for example you are using a capture card then it shouldn't be an issue. However for sure if you are going for a new build obviously get a new graphic card.

The problem is actually the elgato, they are lying for the system requirements(my personal opinion lol)
This part is a lie: "Game Capture HD: 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (or comparable)"
This however is correct and should be the only thing they should mention as for cpu requirement: "2nd generation Intel Core i7 CPU(i7-2xxx or comparable)"

i do not recommend buying a laptop for gaming and streaming, not even as a portable streaming machine. the money you have to invest into a laptop to the point where its able to stream + game without having issues literally builds you a pc with an i7+gtx980 and still be cheaper.

as sendblink23 already said.

keep the psu
the hdd is okay there are newer seagate barracudas with more cache, they go for 1tb ~ 45euro gotta look into some uk store to get actual numbers for you though.

the aircooler im pretty sure will not fit on current sockets.

ddr2 is outdated though you can sell it since people pay quite a bit for it

your gpu is also quite old and will probably be too weak for obs to properly work.



but to sum it your current system working as a streaming only machine should be able to handle the stream load imho if you are only playing on ps4 and dont plan to game on the pc

Eh, the GPU will work as a holdover. It's old, but if he's just recording from a cap card, it isn't going to be stressed, and I believe it's DX10 compliant.

I'd still say an upgrade is needed (the Core2 line are fossils at this point), but for now, try the high-quality local recordings guide; it may allow you to make it work in the meantime:

Definitely AVOID a laptop. Twice the price for half the capability, and with how 'heavy' a computing load real-time video encoding is, they generally have a hard time keeping up unless you're shelling out a pretty massive amount.

Thank you gents/ladies for your input. I think I will renew the system as it will be more hassle in the long run trying to get dated equipment to work.

With a budget of around the £1000 mark will I be able to get a machine that is more than capable of gaming and streaming? Or is it always best to dedicate a machine for streaming? (at present I only game on the PS4 however I used to be a hardcore PC gamer so may venture back).

Everyone's input has been much appreciated and I have noted down the recommendations.
