Question / Help Any Ability to Pause During Recording, then Resume Recording?

I only use this software to record my screen. I have not used it for anything else. I noticed that while I'm recording, I cannot pause the recording. I will like to be able to pause my recording and continue the same recording later. For example I'm recording a webiner and they start discussing things that are of no interest to me, how can I pause the recording and resume recording when they return to topic?

I'm running the new Windows 10.

Thanks

When you stop the recording, when you start again, it should (assuming you're using sane settings) start a new file.

That's what it should do Harold, that's what it does, it starts a new file because you STOPPED the recording and then STARTED a NEW recording. I am looking for a PAUSE button so that I can PAUSE a recording and RESUME the same recording.

Just splice using editing software. Pause isn't in either OBS.

Harold what is "splice using editing software"? Is it too hard to put a PAUSE button on OBS? It is a simple thing to do if they want to do it. Simple thing but will greatly enhance the capability of this software.

If it's so simple then you could do it yourself. The software is open source. The recordings will be edited in the end either way and does not warrant the amount of work required to put this in.

It's significantly less effort to combine multiple video files into one than it is to add a "pause" function to OBS.

I have found suggestions for the pause function that date back to 2013.

Look at where we are now. It's not a priority.

Use a piece of video editing software, openshot or even ffmpeg, to splice the videos into one.

Hi Ken.
I think you and I, along with other screen recorders, are in the minority when it comes to OBS.
Although pausing during recording screens for things like tutorials makes perfect sense the focus of OBS is obviously on streaming and game capture in particular, which is largely a 'go' or ' stop' process.
We may be better to utilise something like CamStudio, VLC media player or Debut that are more designed to our purpose.
Having said that Harold and mgrx are right in saying it is not difficult to splice files together.
I downloaded OBS for the first time today with high hopes after watching a number of videos on how to use it but have immediately come up against a limitation in recording the software I most wish to record, but that is the subject of another thread.

Using any video editing suite, it's quite a lot easier to edit with multiple video files anyway. A pause function would just look clunky in the end product, leading to awkward segment ends and jump-cuts between everything, or having to cut each video into multiple segments anyway to trim and arrange them on your timeline. Not to mention the problems arising if you need multiple takes, use overlays, or sync up voiceovers.

So consider the extra workload of adding a pause button that will just lead to bad looking videos anyway, and it's not hard to understand why it's been a non-priority for years.

I thought youtubers liked the jump cuts. Anyways, there is no pause button, and one isn't coming any time soon either. Assuming this isn't an immediate deal-breaker for you, you have at least two options: 1) Record in one long file and afterwards edit out the parts you don't want in a NLE, or 2) hit stop and start for each pause and have multiple files. You can stitch them together in a NLE or a program like avidemux.
