How about partial alpha? It seems to me that when something on screen has an alpha of something from 1% to 99%, it's going to be e.g. 1% of the color in video and 99% black instead of 99% of the underlying video.

I've had no problems with that when I render a ProRes 4444 file from After Effects. Works great for Lower Thirds, any motion graphics, glows, etc. Just make sure the alpha is premultiplied, not straight.
