So on my "away" scene I would like music to play, but not have my desktop audio or microphone audio go through. For example, whenever I am taking a break I would like to mute my mic and desktop audio so I can talk to my friends over team speak without the whole stream hearing us, but instead of just having a picture also have a track playing over it.

In the current version of OBS this is not really possible. I guess you could use the video plugin to play music, or you could setup a player to play to some other sound card (see VAC or VB-Audio), then use the directshow audio plugin to capture that, as you include that as a source. I'm not sure how well that all would work though..
In the rewrite, audio sources are treated the same as normal sources, so you can include them in your scenes, and you'll be able to specify which scene has which audio inputs. This should definitely make this possible.
