Question / Help A lot of stuttering/jerkiness in OBS preview & stream feed (capture card)

specs:
i7 4790k
msi r9 390
crucial ballistix sport 8g (2x4)
samsung evo 850 250gb
wd 1tb black
msi z97 pc mate

win10 64 bit (have tried both win7 64 and win10 to test the issue with no difference either way, as well as using my mechanical drive to test)

Like the title says, have been getting stuttering and jerking in my video feed when using any kind of capture card. I guess I can best describe it as constant skipping and a shaking (almost vibrating) effect that happens every other second. Have tried Dazzle DVC 100, GV-USB2, and Micomsoft sc-512n1-l/dvi. I've been using Amarectv (via live function) to get the feed into OBS. Whenever i record only with Amarec, the footage seems perfectly fine, no stuttering, jerking, or anything. I've tried also just adding all the capture cards as a device rather than through Amarec Live function. I've tried toying with resolution, framerate, bitrate and various quality settings. None of them make any difference, except when they simply make the feed choppier/super unstable (I'm assuming it's becuase the quality settings at that point are simply too high for my machine to handle).

Attach log files from last stream (not sure if I needed both, but only did 1 stream today and came out with 2 log files stamped with this date).

EDIT: adding in some details I forgot

check your chipset drivers are updated with your motherboard's website (those are usually the best drivers). Second, upgrade your capture card's drivers as well.

have updated to latest chipset drivers (haven't tried any older version to see if there was some weird conflict), and have updated my capture card drivers to latest, and tried multiple versions as well.

I have found that sometimes with capture card drivers, you have to do an uninstall via the device manager and check the option that says "remove driver". then do an update to the latest. As I said before, chipset drivers can just be installed but the best ones are the ones from the mobo's website.

Am using chipest drivers from the mobo's site, and have done that process of uninstalling my cap card's (all of the ones I've tested) and reinstalling latest. Another thing worth noting is that I notice OBS affects my amarec window when it begins acting up. As in: start amarec (acting fine, smooth feed) -> open OBS and add amarec (via live or screen capture seems to make no difference)-> OBS gives choppy feed then Amarec seems to be affected by it as well.

yeah you should probbaly not have both open at once. I'm surprised it wont give a black screen if its being captured by amarec.

Second. try increasing scene buffering to 1000. now different from scene buffering, you can go in the properties for the video capture device in OBS and set a buffer. try a to enable then set a 1ms buffer. playing with that should have a decent affect on the scene jitter. I would even go as far to restart OBS with every different setting you change in the scene.

Sorry for the trouble. I am just telling you what I would do if I was troubleshooting this.

Lastly, what is the fps set to in the video capture device? is it 59.98 or 60fps?

No trouble at all! I appreciate any input on this problem. Using Amarec with OBS is fairly common use for being able to capture and hold a high quality local recording (through amarec) in these more retro console set ups. I know it's something I should've mentioned before so apologies for that. Most people will use Amarec to get a feed from their capture card, then use the live function (produces a better quality image over simply screen capturing) to add Amarec as a virtual capture device into OBS. Doing either this or screen capturing gives me the same effect, as well as simply adding the capture card alone into OBS. I will try toying around your suggestions today then and report back what happens. Again, thanks for your help, I do appreciate it!

I've tried amarec once as it is light weight but I do not know the advantage over direct into OBS as that is light weight as well and a one stop shop.

Alright, have tried your suggestions with no difference. I tried the suggested values as well as constantly changing them to see if they made a difference. Tried both using Amarec Live and just using the capture card directly. Also forgot to answer your question but: my capture card gives 59.402 as its default option, tried both 60fps and 59.98 with no difference as well (again both with Amarec Live and just adding the capture card by itself as a device). What really stumps me is sometimes it's 'fine' but most of the time it's a jittery mess. Not sure what is triggering it to act up like it is.

I dont know what the conflict could be. Continue testing and keep us up to date on the resolve.

Very frustrating problem, but thank you for your help. I'm open to any suggestion, wish I could just figure it out ;_;

100% exact issue over here, been dealing with it for a year now. Same Capture Card, similar PC specs. Any solutions on your end yet?

Unfortunately no, I guess might as well update thread with things I've tried. Have tried different gpu (gtx580), different hard drive (wd black 1tb), have changed several power saving options (both in windows & bios) that I've seen suggested, different RAM (still an 8gig 2x4 kit but figured couldn't hurt to test), programs like re-clock, cru, and windows repair, different monitor, 144hz from a friend and another 60hz, (currently using 60hz anyway but again thought it couldn't hurt) and that's about it for now. Not sure what else to test aside from different PSU (changing mobo/cpu is out of hand for me at the moment unfortunately)
