[ Important Disclaimer: This thread is meant for those who want to use NDI but are struggling to get their gaming pc displaying a fluid 60fps preview in OBS before it is supposed to be sent over via NDI to your streaming pc.
For the following example I am obviously trying it at a bonkers resolution of 3440x1440 so if anyone of you use 1080p, this thread should help you hopefully a lot more as I am kind of making it work already 50/50 (depending on the game) at a much higher resolution. ]

So i have tried to fiddle around a lot making the OBS Preview work by displaying the full fluid 60fps motion and I would like to share my findings and present issues with the community so maybe someone can learn and improve his stream from this or even help me out with my remaining problems :).

my Setup is:

i7 5960x @3Ghz (8-Core)
GTX 980 Phantom 4GB in 2-Way SLI
32GB Ram
SSD
Resolution: 3440x1440@60Hz

So far from reading through the forums and diverse pages on the web I have found out:

- Use Display Capture
- Enable Vsync
- Limit FPS to 60 FPS ingame

--> both of those should result in your GPU not maxing out with 95-100% (see why below).

I found out that your GPU needs a certain cushion of free GPU usage in order to have enough processing power left for a fluid preview on the gaming pc OBS. For instance I have a GTX 980 4GB in 2 Way SLI. I found that in order to get something like 60fps in the preview window, the percental usage of the GPU should not exceed 50-60% depending on what game (I tested this with the game Miscreated). Games like Rocket League work without a problem as i barely hit 50% Usage! You can look it up in the task manager on the most recent windows updates. They added GPU monitoring under "Performance".

So I can only guess that on a SINGLE GPU solution your max usage should not exceed about 70-80% but you should just test it yourself where the limit is as I might be wrong with where the % limit should be. Also bare in mind, my 980s have aged a little. There are far more powerful GPUs out now that have at least double the dedicated RAM so my percentual calculations might be way off. Thanks!

In short: Just see how your preview behaves when you dial down the % usage on your particular GPU. You can do this by lowering details or even resolution ingame if you need to.

I guess my problem is simply that I am hellbent on trying to make my GPUs&OBS handle 3440x1440 (downscaled and uploaded in 1720x720). But this creates the issue of both of my GPUs getting maxed out almost. Also it has a lot to do with what game you play. In the case of testing it with Miscreated, no matter how low I went with the graphical settings, my gpus did not get below 60% so the suttering (30-40fps instead of 60fps) still persisted. Only way I could overcome this is by additionally lowering the ingame resolution. But lets be honest, once you had that max resolution all that time, you dont really want to get lower. There are simply so much more details to see, especially concerning enemies ingame that can be spotted earlier but enough of that.

My guess is that my GPUs might not be powerful enough or maybe even lack the needed amount of Ram that sits on my GPUs. Maybe 4GB is simply not enough anymore?

I think of maybe waiting another year for the 2080 Ti to arrive. That might just fix my problem all together.

What are your thoughts?

Best,
