(2) Video Capture Devices Not Working Now

Hello all...I have a weird question. Can a HDMI splitter cause an elgato game capture hd and a startech usb3hdcap device to stop working? Both of these capture devices worked fine until I placed and REI powered HDMI splitter upstream. It's like the units are "FRYED" the elgato keeps asking if the HDMI cable is plugged in. I have tried using the 2 capture devices on multiple laptops and I get no video or audio with the startech in OBS and the elgato is no better. Did I actually hurt the devices by using a powered splitter?
 
One of the mystical things around hdmi is that the sink (target of the signal) may talk to the source back, for instance which resolution and framerate it supports (or prefers).

Hence a dilemma for splitters. Two sinks on one source could lead to different preferences. There is no algorithm for determining the least common denominator. Often these splitters declare one of their outputs to "master" (which then decides over the final driven resolution) and the other as "passively driven" with a Take-it-or-leave-it decision to the "slave" output. Others leave the source alone to decide, others do bind all participants to fixed resolution and/or framerate.

If there's damage to your grabbers you could simply test by using them without the splitter again. Okay then?
That would be the first i'd try. Hope you have not damage due to static of the three participants.

The second try would be then to alternate the two grabbers on the output side. Then you should consult the documentation to the splitter regarding the valid formats and resolutions it supports (and to which side). The final step would be to drop and substitute the splitter by another model.

Sometimes simpler models do better job...
 
Thanks for the reply. I have tried both capture devices without the splitter on several laptops and neither works. I was hoping I could reset the devices or do something. I have tried different cables and reinstalling the capture software but nothing seems to work. I can not get any video to register in OBS. I have called a half a dozen people and nobody has a solution. The StarTech was over 200.00 and I hate to think I ruined it. The funny thing is I have used the splitter a ton with mi Atem Mini and never had a problem :)
