My monitor is 1280x1024

When I streamed, I had multiple people tell me my stream was just a box.

However, when I went into OBS video settings and set it to 1920x1080, it just made it a very small square.

Can I not stream in that resolution without a different monitor?

Your native resolution is lower than the resolution in obs. Without resizing it your stream will be a tiny box.
Set your obs res to 1280*1024 and use the preview to make sure that your source is filling the whole preview screen.

Your monitor is not a 16:9 resolution, so you will have bars on the side of your stream making the stream look like a box. This is perfectly normal due to the size of your monitor.
