Question / Help ~15 FPS with monitor capture regardless of resolution

Hey guys,

I understand that Nvidia laptops (like mine) need to have their 3D settings set to "integrated" in order to capture a monitor.

I also understand that the integrated graphics is usually pretty crappy.

However, I'm curious if I have something wrong somewhere, because it seems that regardless of the resolution I set my OBS video to, I still get ~15fps.

It doesn't matter if it's at a full 1920x1200 or at 3x downscale.

Here are my settings an example of my FPS at highest and lowest resolutions. Notice the near non-existent FPS change.

How is it possible I am only averaging 2-3 more FPS by running my resolution at a 3x downscale?

As far as my laptop goes, it's a Lenovo Y50 and is actually quite beefy. I am able to run most current games at 1920x1200 at medium-high graphics at a steady 40-50+ FPS.

You may notice in my OBS video settings I only have the 860m available to select, however in my Nvidia settings from my desktop, I do actually have OBS set to Integrated (so I don't get a black screen).

Is there a reason you need to use monitor capture? That puts all the work on the graphic card (Which isn't that great sorry) instead of the cpu which is really great. I have the same laptop, and depending on the game, you should be able to stream at 1280 * 720 at 30fps using game capture instead! I don't stream from it, just saying I could.

Right, I just tried something like that but it is not completely desirable.

I am able to get Photoshop to stream in "Game Capture," but it does not record any of the extra windows within Photoshop, only the viewport.

I also want to stream work I am doing in Unity, and that also only works within 1 window within Unity, not all of the windows within it.

They do stream perfectly at 30 FPS (like I said, good laptop, good vid card, as you know) in this way. However I would like my viewers to be able to see all the extra windows within PS/Unity... which I can only seem to get to work with Monitor capture.

(OBS classic only) Does "Game Capture" have an option to capture DWM (faster monitor capture)?

Could try "Window Capture", but that may not capture extra windows.

Could try OBS-Studio to check if it works better or not.

Just tried OBS Studio.

OH MY GOD! It's perfect! Thank you sooooooooo much!!!!

My monitor streaming runs at a flawless 30 fps with OBS Studio!!!!

I was dreading launching my tutorial streams and having people suffer at 15 FPS while I painted / demo'd for people. Yaaaaay!!
