The trick was in the manual and i quote
Code: 
MPEG video requires frame widths that are divisible by 16 and frame heights that are divisible by 2.
Noncompliant frame dimensions can cause unpredictible results or system instability.

Make sure CFR is enabled when recording.
 
I think OBS fixes frame sizes automatically, though I could be wrong.

Enabling CFR is always recommended when creating files that will be edited later on in an NLE...a lot of editors don't seem to play well with VFR.
