you tube tv play interference

I have some streaming video I would like to record on my pc. Recently a driver provider caused many problems to my pc and my elgato needs to be resetup to work. Also that requires a two pc setup to do these simple recordings. I gave it a little thought about just a separate recorder. I had used (actually more like attempted) OBS a few years ago and found it pretty hard to use and not the best at all. This time I found a much different system and it set up easily. A recording was easy and came out great. So it appears OBS has done a great job with changes they have made and it seems like it is likely very usable to me. To play the video I had no player for the mkv file. I added a codec pak from shark, which I had used before. It still wouldn’t play, but then I used the converter and quickly and easily converted that to an mp4 and I could play it. So all fine there.

Now comes the problem. I use YouTube TV for my tv service and I don’t know if anyone is real familiar with their player setup. It worked fine that evening after the OBS and codec pak. But the next day after a restart I would get an error about how the media format was not supported and I could play no live or dvr tv. It turned out that a different pc would work fine. While on the phone to UTTV I thought of the changes I had made and told them I would test to see if they caused this. I first uninstalled the codec pak and that did not help. I did a system restore and that did not do it. I then uninstalled OBS which did not do it. I did another system restore to before the OBS install and that fixed this problem. So my question is does anyone know if there may be some system change or incompatibility between OBS and UTTV that would cause this or have any idea why this would be? I can retry installing OBS while doing nothing with any codec pak but I thought I would ask first if anyone knows what to do or try. I use W7 64 bit. Thanks for any help. Fred

1. Windows 7 is not supported. As long as you have a genuine copy of W7, you can update to W10 for free:
2. If you were using a supported operating system, go to OBS Settings, Advanced, Recording, Check box for 'Automatically remux to mp4', [Apply], [OK]
Then why does this say windows 7? https://projectobs.com/en/download/

That is not an official OBS download site. The official OBS download site will open if you scroll up this forum page to the top and click on the big "Download" link in the top right corner.

Your issues seem to come from the fact you installed some unrelated 3rd party "codec pack", which is neither necessary or recommended to operate your original TV app, nor to operate OBS Studio. You should seek support with the provider of that codec pack if you have any issues with it, such as not able to play back media any more. OBS Studio is self-contained. It has its codecs built in and neither exposes them to the system, nor depends on already installed system codecs.

Thank you for at least addressing my issue instead of just telling me to get W10. I tended to think it was the codec but it didn't seem to revert until I restored to before the OBS install. I installed the codec as I couldn't play the mkv file. I will reinstall at some point and see if the problem returns and maybe use an older version that apparently was supported for W7. Thanks.
