Workspaces on Ubuntu

Is there any way to record a specific workspace on Ubuntu rather than always the active one?

No, also the DE's will not render work spaces when they are not active for obvious performance reasons. So there is nothing really any of interest to capture.

In that case, is it possible to somehow simulate an always active second monitor where I can place only the apps that I want OBS to record?
