Working With Odd Canvas Size.

I use 2 mirroless cam sources @ 1080x1920 to record vertical content. I originally had a 1080x1920 canvas with each cam on it's own scene and source record plugin recording the cam's seperately for post editing. Unfornately, I've found the plugin to be unreiable.

I am trying an alternative by using a 2160x1920 canvas to record both cams on 1 scene then just crop in editor to 1080x1920. So far so good but I'm having trouble playing back and scrubbing through footage in Quicktime/Preview/Editor with a Macbook M1X 64gb / HEVC Hardware encoder / CBF @ 80. Making Proxies in editor helped but it'd be nice to preview footage before importing to editor and make proxies.

Countless YT videos of M1X chips editing 4k raw footage effortlessly yet I'm over here scratching my head. Is it because I'm using an odd 2160x1920 canvas? Would it be better to set my canvas to a more common resolution like 4K UHD but vertical @ 2160x3840?
