Question / Help With OBS open (not yet streaming), Fortnite runs at 144hz fullscreen, borderless run 70-130fps, why?

I think a couple of weeks ago it ran fun borderless, even while streaming. 2 weeks ago I tried to stream but couldn't as the fps would jump erratically.

Today I find out that with just obs open while fortnite is running borderless, my fps in game goes wonky. I then tried it with fortnite fullscreen and no fps drops, just solid 144hz.

Does fullscreen make that great of a difference over borderless? Is there some setting I'm forgetting?

also borderless always produces less FPS in any game.. Full Screen lets your gpu forget about everything else and focus on your game, that is why it takes a second to alt tab out of full screen, its switching priorities

I run Fortnite fullscreen with FPS limiter at 120FPS in game. Vsync off. This on a GTX 1070 with 2560x1440 at 144hz.
The thing that can cause a lot of problems in rendering lag in OBS is the Fortnite shadow settings. It generates very high CPU usage leaving little for OBS to sneak in.
I recommend setting it to Medium and you will see most of your problems go away.

Fixed.

Just turn down shadows and draw distance fixed it. Seems like my pc wasn't up to spec. Just weird because I thought I streamed before without any problems due to my graphics settings

Good to hear. Yeah, its primarily the shadows. I had a typo above.
"It generates very high CPU usage" should be "It generates very high GPU usage".
