Windows bing sounds recorded on VHS capture

Hello, first time poster. I just started getting into OBS when I decided to digitize some old VHS tapes. Anyway, you know that sound Windows 11 makes when you raise the Volume? When capture video from my VCR and I raise the Volume in Windows, that "ding" sound gets captured. So now, I just make sure I'm basically not doing anything when I capture but it would be nice stop it. On the Windows side I turned kf sounds for notifications to help with a random notification during my capture.

In OBS i disabled the default audio but then it didn't record any sounds. I tried turning off all the channels for desktop audio and only leave my USB capture card. Nothing seems to be working.

Any ideas? I'm assuming the audio is being captured by my USB card but it seems like OBS is pulling the Audio that passing through windows rather than directly from the USB card.

In the audio settings USB card and Desktop audio are active.

If the only audio you want to capture is coming from the USB card, you can mute / remove the desktop audio. A log might help show what's wrong.

Please post a log with your issue! Here's how...

OBS Studio creates a log file each time you run it which contains very useful diagnostic information. Without a log file, it's much harder for any support volunteers to figure out problems and your post may be ignored. To upload a log file, go to the Help menu > Log Files > Upload Last Log...

I'm not sure how to make Desktop Audio to Inactive.

Try setting your capture device to "monitor and output" (if you want to hear the audio too) or just "output" if you only want to record the audio. Then go to OBS Settings, Audio, and set desktop audio to disabled.

You're awesome. That fixed it, thank you very much. I thought Monitor and Output meant Monitoring the audio In to OBS and what it sounds like going Out. Since I was using Studio Mode with the 2 small screens I thought lol. It makes much more sense now. Thanks again.

Funny enough I didn't realize this. My first few tapes my microphone was enabled and I can hear me talking most of the video lol.

The mute button affects everything.

Kinda like the old Mackie SR series of analog audio consoles. (I have one with a date stamp in 1999 or 2000, depending on where you look) Most sound boards keep the channel strip running when you mute it, but stop all of the outputs from that strip *except for the headphone button*. That's a *very* welcome consideration for the sound guy, but it can require several different physical mute points to operate together from the one button. The Mackie SR series has a single mute point early in the channel strip, which kills absolutely everything *including* the headphone button. This means that the channel must be on before the headphones can tell you what's in it. That's how OBS works too.

There's a story about a high school sound guy that got bored during a dance recital, so he put one of his favorite CD's in the rackmount player next to one of those cheap, ubiquitous Mackie SR boards and put the headphones on......
