Question / Help Window Capture not working properly.

I use OBS studio on my Mac but a friend of mine use it on Windows 10. For some reason recently the "Window Capture" source seem to stop working properly. She's not sure when this started though. For some odd reason she can get Skype to show up but it won't capture any other Windows. They all show black. She is on version 0.16.2. I had her uninstall (but save the settings during uninstallation) and install version 0.15.0 but it still did the same thing. So she reinstalled version 0.16.2 and still the same thing. As anybody else experienced is and if so figured a way to correct it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: After messing around a little more it appears that this problem may have occurred after some Windows update which is dated on October 17. It will grab some windows but most it won't, specifically browser windows. Not sure how to proceed to correct the problem.

It's actually all browsers, Chrome, Opera, Edge and Brave. We discovered shortly before your reply that disabling harder acceleration in chrome works. But disabling hardware acceleration in Brave had no effect on capturing its window. The problem also lies with Windows media player. The funny thing is all these used to work before. But thank you for the reply. Chrome alone will have to do until lightly there is a complete solution one way or another. :)

Okay, we discovered she is on the Windows 10 anniversary update version 1607. Which apparently broke things. So we're assuming that's where the problem lies. We would just have to see what transpires from now. :)

I don't believe the AU update affected the ability to capture browsers. That said, window capture does not work on Windows App Store programs, just in case you were trying to do that.

No, was just trying to capture browser window mainly. It will capture Windows media player but once you start to play a video Windows media player shows black in "window capture". It's a very odd occurrence. According to a post I found yesterday though, Windows anniversary update appears to be what caused the problem and that Windows is aware there is some problem and are looking into it. By the way, my friend used to use xsplit until they switched to OBS and xsplit is experiencing the exact same thing when doing a screen capture. That's when we realized it had to have been caused by something with a Windows 10 update.

Window Capture on Chrome with hardware acceleration broke in Chrome 50, if I recall correctly. It didn't have anything to do with a Windows Update as far as I'm aware. I don't know how to easily roll back to Chrome 49 to confirm that though. It is curious that it's also broken in other browsers as well.

I think Edge doesn't work because it's a UWP application, which makes that a separate case (UWP application Window/Game Capture is not yet supported).

Well, by disabling"hardware acceleration" we were able to get OBS to display Google Chrome in "window capture". But no other browsers can be displayed using "window capture".

What other browsers? Other browsers can also use hardware acceleration. You can try disabling that setting in those browsers as well.

Firefox works fine for me, even with its hardware acceleration enabled (Windows 10 Version 1607 Pro 64-bit, OBS Studio 0.16.4 64-bit, Firefox 49.0.2). I've already explained why Edge cannot be captured. Brave is a fork of Chromium, which is what Chrome is based on, so if the Chrome hardware-acceleration issue is actually a Chromium issue, then I'm not surprised that Brave would show the same behavior.

After the two latest hot fixes we tried "window capture" again and still only Google Chrome can be displayed and no other browser. If I understand correctly the hot fixes are for Nvidia and AMD graphics cards. Or at least that's how I understand. Unfortunately, She has an Intel graphics card in her computer.

Funny thing is that "display capture" works okay. But for what she wants to do that won't work sufficiently because if she uses "display captured" and then crop the area that she wants to show, If she accidentally puts a window in front of that area it hides what she wants to show.

I mentioned in a previous post that my friend used to use xsplit but had switched to OBS. Well yesterday we discovered by tinkering around that if she goes into the screen option in xsplit and disable "Exclusive Window Capture" (whatever that does) she can now capture all browser windows in xspit. I'm including this information just in case it may be a clue to watch happening that the developers can look into. I'm including a screen capture of that window.

Well, by disabling hardware acceleration that allowed Chrome to work. Disabling hardware acceleration in Brave had no effect. Brave still would not capture. We also tried Opera and it would not capture. I'll check with my friend and see if she wants to try Firefox. She will have to install that. Thanks for the tip about Firefox.

Will , my friend just installed Firefox and it worked. Thank you again for the tip about Firefox. That will work just fine. Hopefully Windows can get this situation resolved soon. The windows 10 anniversary update which apparently I had some affect on her Intel graphics card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Glad it worked out.

I am not currently aware of any issues regarding Intel graphics adapters and the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
