White preview window when OBS auto-starts

I have set up Windows Task Scheduler to launch OBS Studio at the same time every week - when I don't actually have any physical display although there is a virtual window that is to be captured by OBS, streamed and recorded.
Until a few months ago it all worked fine. But since about v 27.3 there has been an annoying issue: when I connect the physical display to see what is happening, both image windows in OBS Studio are whited-out. The streaming and recording are working OK, but the images don't show in the OBS Studio visual interface. (Please see screenshot attached)
Furthermore, I cannot find any way of recovering my OBS Studio interface, other than by quitting OBS and starting it again. That works fine - but I really don't want to interrupt the stream and the recording by having to restart OBS.
Any suggestions, please, for how to recover the OBS user interface without restarting OBS - or how to prevent the white windows in the first place?
Many thanks in advance -
