ok so I go to add a media file to make a background for streaming and it shows me the menu in file explorer where you select the file you want and it is only showing files from like 1-2 years ago I even open file explorer and it shows all the correct files. then I even copy the file I want and paste it into the obs window and click ok and it says the file doesn't exist. I check in file explorer and it says it there again i don't know what to do

What is the actual location you're trying to access the file from? Are you going to the full file path, or are you using an abstracted folder like Pictures, or Documents?

And when you go to Add Media source, are you paying attention to any file filtering in that File Explorer window (vs all files *.*)?
And are you sure the media type is one supported by OBS?

yeah I even made it so all files show but it still won't show the correct file
and yes I checked and the file is supported

I looked in the documents folder. I even put the file I wanted on my desktop and checked that folder

Reaching out on a limb here. ... I hate MS Windows recent default behavior to hide file extensions.
Have you turned off the Hide File extensions view option and made sure file doesn't have a unexpected file extension?
