Question / Help What sort of stream/recording performance can i expect from my rig?

Hello,

I've been wanting to stream and record a few videos of the new Hades game - this is the first game I've attempted to stream since upgrading my workstation.

So far trying both NVENC and x264 via OBS and Slabs has produced awful results; the stuttering and frame timing is really bad.

My specs:

Ryzen 5 2600 3.4ghz - stock no OC
16GB DDR4 (2x8) in dual channel.
Rog Strix 1070ti
2 x SSD + 1 nvme drive

40mb downstream
8mb upstream

As a test, I also tried ShadowPlay which produced very good results - not stunning,3 but far surpassing OBS.

I'm playing this game @ 1440p resolution on a 144hz monitor with GSync turned on. There are no detail settings for this game but its not what i would consider a resource killer.

Can anyone suggest some ideal settings (as these were the settings recommended by the auto configuration wizard).

Thanks in advance!
Neil

I'm starting to think this may be the resolution and frame rate I'm playing at.

Would there be any benefit to capping my frame rate at 60-75?

Try using NVENC for streaming as well as the local copy. Software is going to cause you issue.

You should be OK at full hd 60fps, but software encoding is going to to hurt.

Thanks mate, what kind of bitrate would you recommend using?
I've just tried 6000, record only and its like a slideshow playing back - no idea what on earth is going on.

Firstly, if your up speed is 8 then I would go with 5, as 6 may be too close the 8, as the 8 is max not constant.

Also, if you are watching your own stream it will eat into the 8, and the act of playback on the same device can itself cause stuttering.

So try and watch the stream on a different device with a different internet connection. Or watch the stream afterwards.

Try isolating the reason for stuttering by trying these:

Reducing bandwidth
Streaming only
Local recording only

And monitor cpu/gpu performance in task manager.

NVENC 6000 recording locally. 1080 canvas and 1080 output.

It barely even plays and i've tried exporting to flv and mp4.

Something is seriously amiss

Thats really really odd. CPU usage by obs is 1%.

What happens when you try and record without the game running?

IE, just set some scrolling text on screen and see if that works or not.

OK So i can't record Hades with G-Sync enabled - it just doesn't play nice.

After disabling GSync, I can now record 60fps @ 1080p with the following settings.

x260
CBR 6000
2
Faster
Main

There's no hitching or freezing, just the slightest drop in framerate every so often but no matter how much i lower the settings this remains.

On the whole its working a lot better than it was before, night and day.

Thanks for your help mate

For recording only you should really use one of the Simple output mode quality presets, you will get much better results.
