I own a r9 290 and fx 8350 and want to record some video at 2560x1080 but x264 is way to taxing on my cpu .
So I tried amd vce but apparently the max resolution is 1920x1920 so that won't work.

Lucky I am looking for a new cpu so maybe Intel quick sync would work?
Or is there a other solution ?

While I'm at it, amd vce has a max res of 1920x1920 and that's about 3.6 million pixels and 2560x1080 has a total of 2.7 million pixels, why doesn't amd vce work with this resolution except vce 3.0 and higher I just don't get the logic.

It's the maximum encoding resolution, you can set the output resolution to 1920x1080 and it will work.
As for your other question about why it has a limit, ask AMD.

Alright so Intel quick sync has a max of 1080p too? Does it make a difference if I buy a cpu with a higher revision of quick sync ?

And the output of 1080p has the issue with it that it cuts off part of the game play/ if I upload it to YouTube is has black bars and I'm trying to make an short clip of the game the division and I like the black bars

And its not sharp and when I am trying to showcase something I would love to see it just as on my monitor (with YouTube compression)

But how does someone record 1440p its basically my resolution but mine misses 360 pixels.

Recording 1920x1920 in sliced scene, 2 Display Capture sources (cloned, easy cropping):
2560x1080 = 1920x1080 + 640x1080 = 1920x1080 + 1920x840 (rotate the 640x1080 in 90CW and even free space left) then revert it in postproduction ^_^ (just kidding)

Quicksync has very high limits on frame size. On a i5-3570K I was able to record 3840x2400 and on a i7-6700k I was able to record 5120x2880 with Quicksync. That doesn't mean older Quicksync versions don't support higher than 3840x????, it only means I didn't test it. As far as I remember, 30 fps should be fine. I didn't try higher frame rates.
