Question / Help What HDMI Capture card(s) are you using with OBS? Is there an OBS Supported Capture Cards list anywhere?

Hi OBS World!

(TL;DR - What HDMI input capture device do you use in OBS please?)

I've recently hit an oddity in that my Startech USB2HDCAPS (tech deets) isn't seen by OBS. The device is in perfect working order, is seen by Windows 10 and the feed works with Vivastation via simple RTMP setting + stream key. However, I want to do more advanced stuff using OBS such as overlays and transitions etc.
I've had a long call + email conversation with Startech support who say that OBS requires Shadowplay from USB devices which their/my device doesn't have. Which is annoying because its a great bit of kit and cost me about £130 ($142) when I bought it. There's no plans to update their firmware any further so instead they're suggesting the next version being the USB3HDCAP (tech deets) unit. I've emailed asking for assurances that this will work with OBS. I've googled to try and find some form of supported OBS Capture card list of some format to save me buying the wrong gear but so far nothing useful - thus my registering and asking this question directly.
That USB3HDCAP unit is about £250+ so I'm interested in asking you lot what capture card do you use in OBS that I can wire my video camera's HDMI output into so that I can feed it into OBS please?

Many thanks in advance,
Maggers!

Yeah no part of that sentence makes any sense.

ShadowPlay is a proprietary screen recorder made by Nvidia that only works with their GPUs. It has nothing whatsoever to do with OBS, or with capture cards. That person either has no idea what they are talking about, or are deliberately misleading you, or possibly both.

That said, I use the AJA UTAP HDMI.

If you have a logfile from attempting to use the StarTech with OBS, attach it.

The AJA UTAP is a pricey piece of kit. What does that do that, in your opinion, say the Elgato 60 S doesn't?

Thanks for the reply

It works on a Macintosh. (It also works in Windows and Linux and is driver-free on all 3 platforms.)

AJA makes professional video gear. It's made for people who need stuff to be bulletproof, and to work with professional broadcast equipment, and it's priced that way. (For instance, they also make an SDI variation, which is something that doesn't really exist in any of the product lines aimed at gamers, like Elgato.)

It's the priciest of the options. Probably the Magewell is the cheapest, with BlackMagic being in the middle, depending on which piece of gear you're looking at.
