What format should I use to save a recording, even after my computer crashes?

Since my computer overheats often, It can crash alot. I was just wondering what recording format I should use to have my recording saved, even if my computer crashes.

MKV is the format you want to use.
Anyway, your computer needs an urgent service for the overheat. Having this problem that often can damage irreparability the hardware like CPU, GPU and motherboard.

You may use MP4 fragmented (but not "hybrid"). At least, it is streaming compatible. AAC encoder for audio, color format NV12, H.264 compatible encoder for video (it is less demanding than some newer encoders, like AV1 or HEVC). Media players: mpv player or VLC player.
