I’m having issues trying to record gameplay and webcam video via my 2017 MacBook Pro (2.9ghz intel core i7, 16GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3, Radeon Pro 560 4GB, Intel Graphic’s 630 1536 MB).
I have a Logitech c920 web cam and a Samson c01u pro mic also connected via USB-C
In OBS I’m using a typical gaming layout, full screen game with webcam smaller bottom left. I’m not capturing game footage via syphon inject because I need to see the mouse cursor and this Ian currently not supported.
My canvas is 1920x1080 30fps. My recording settings are: mp4, Apple VT h264 hardware encoder, bitrate 5000, keyframe interval=0, profile (none), use b-frames ON.
When I record it starts off fine and then after 1-2 mins my macs fans go crazy and the game starts to lag. Im not sure what it could be:
• I’m aware that macs don’t have decent GPUs so it could potentially be that but I can get the game to run to a decent level without OBS open.
• It could also be something to do with my retina screen? If so would using an external monitor help? Perhaps OBS is trying to process too many pixels, so if I assign capture to an external monitor 1920x1080 would that help?
• I suspect it could also be that the game ( football manager 2018-specifically its match engine) is buggy on Mac. But, like I said, I’ve got it running ok without OBS recording.

I’ve been messing about with this for months now. Surely the latest MacBook Pro should be capable of handling this kind of load?
I actually had OBS and the game working ok together when I was using different settings a while back and recording to MKV but I can’t remember what settings I was using and I wasn’t using my current webcam or mic. I was using my Canon 5d mk2 with some third party software to enable capture within OBS. This seemed to work ok, less game lag, but the fans went crazy. My understanding is that the Logitech C920 has built in encoding so the Mac is doing less, so I thought this would be a better option?
Basically Ive tried lots but something has messed up somewhere along the way and there are so many variables that I am tearing my hair out. I’ve tried and tried to fix this on my own but now I need help. I just don’t know enough to be able to decipher the issue.
So my questions are:
• Is there anything I can do in OBS settings that may help? What are you’re top tips? Should I just reset to default and start again with new settings? What should they be?
• My wife also has the latest MacBook Pro- could I potentially network them using Ethernet and NDI plugin to get better results? Would this essentially mean that one Mac processor is concentrating on handling just running the game and the other is concentrating on just the video recording? I can get the game to run ok when not recording through OBS.
• Anything else you recommend? I can’t afford a dedicated gaming PC or an external GPU so need to try to find a way (hack!) to make this setup work. Possible?
Thanks in advance! Help me OBS community! You are my only hope!
(PS ok away from my machine at the moment so haven’t included a log file - if it’s useful I can upload one when I get back to my machine tonight)
