Question / Help Weird Freeze/Glitch while streaming NVENC

Hey y'all! Tinkering with streaming more lately. Using the default encoder seems to make the stream pretty choppy (might need to lower bitrate from 2500?) but NVENC seems to stream just fine on NVENC encoder. The only weird thing is that using NVENC seems to produce some weird freezes (sometimes crashes) while streaming, as demonstrated shortly after 16:30 on this VOD and quite a few times throughout:

https://www.twitch.tv/tastyjerk/v/101112240?t=16m30s

It creates a weird green flash, freezes the stream for a second, and even messes up parts of the overlay. Know what might be causing this? Unfortunately I don't have logs since this was a few streams ago, will grab logs when I try this again.

My computer specs: CPU: Intel i5-3570 3.4 GHz
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce 970 GTX - 4GB DDR5
RAM: 16GB 1600MHz

I'm also having the same weird green freeze when recording locally with NVENC (not streaming).
Seems to be totally random when it happens.
I noticed it happening in Obs studio 0.16.5.

System Specs:
Windows 10 pro
Intel 5820k cpu
Asus GTX 980
16G of ram
Nvidia Driver version 368.81

Hi! Please post a log from a session where this occurs.

Based on your description, that sounds like the expected side-effect of the Windows 10 AU workaround introduced in OBS Studio 0.16.3.
From the Windows 10 AU PSA sticky:
If you're using an Nvidia graphics card, unfortunately, there is currently no way for you to completely fix it, but there are some workarounds that you can try. First, consider updating to the latest version of OBS Studio. OBS Studio 0.16.3 introduced a workaround for this problem, but there's a catch. When the error is triggered, instead of freezing completely, the stream/recording may pause briefly and then show some green frames while OBS rebuilds its Direct3D assets. If that's okay with you, go update!

From the OBS Studio 0.16.3 release notes:
Added a workaround for a graphics driver issue occurring on Windows 10 Anniversary Update (1607) that would cause the program to appear to freeze and stop streaming/recording.
  • With this workaround, when the issue occurs, the D3D11 graphics subsystem now fully releases and then rebuilds all Direct3D references (basically restarts the graphics subsystem and reloads all data) to allow the program to continue working rather than freeze/crash.
  • Note that when it occurs while streaming or recording, a few frames may display as green in the encoded output.

The game i got the Green flashes on was Skyrim Special Edition.
Sadly i dont have the logs anymore for the video captured.

Today i recorded Fallout 3 and obs overwrote the logs.
I got 2 Fallout vids (30 minutes each) done today and neither of them have the Green flash, maybe as its DX9?

Next batch of Skyrim vids i do ill keep an eye on it to see if the green comes back again.
Thanks :)

This is the thing that happens to me too , OBS 0.16.5 , updated to the latest AMD driver (16.11.3) and the latest AMD plugin too. Gonna have to roll back my OS since it updated by itself.

It should not be happening on AMD drivers 16.10.2 or higher. Please provide us with logs from a session where this happens. Since this thread is about Windows 10 AU issues with NVENC, I recommend making your own thread.

After checking my last batch of Skyrim SE vids, I've got the log file for the green frame error.
I think its at line: 12:13:36.932

Looking at the PSA For Windows 10 thread im not seeing any of the errors listed in my log.
Could it just be an issue with Skyrim?

From your log:
12:17:05.539: Device Remove/Reset! Rebuilding all assets...
[...]
12:27:14.783: Device Remove/Reset! Rebuilding all assets...
[...]
12:30:55.518: Device Remove/Reset! Rebuilding all assets...
12:39:23.304: Device Remove/Reset! Rebuilding all assets...
12:40:20.018: Device Remove/Reset! Rebuilding all assets...
This is the workaround to the Windows 10 AU issue. As I stated above, it will cause a few green frames while it rebuilds the graphics assets. No, this is not just a problem with Skyrim SE. It can happen with any game on Windows 10 AU, but it will occur more often with resource-intensive games, such as Skyrim.

As stated in the PSA sticky, we're waiting on Nvidia to fix their drivers. If green frames are a huge deal breaker for you, then you'll have to use one of the other workarounds listed in the sticky.
