Question / Help webcam works in settings, not in scenes

I have a logitec C920 camera that isn't working in scenes. When I open the Logitec software, I can see and configure the device, and see its video. In OBS (I'm running as administrator to get display capture to work) I add it to a scene but it doesn't show up.

if i click on the "gear" setting for the "video capture device", when the popup comes up, I can see the video from the device. all the settings are the default except for "deactivate when not showing, which i have checked.

when i go back to the scene it doesn't show. i've tried to highlight the "video capture device" and right click, then, "order...move to top", but still nothing. i've tried resizing and moving the display capture thinking the webcam display was buried, but it isn't.

log here:

any pointers would be very appreciated.

I have logitech c920 as well but have never experienced this problem.
What is the resolution in obs you use in the webcam?
If its to large it wont pop up or the video wil get stuck.

You could try to reinstall or update OBS.
Unchecking the "deactivate when not showing" didn't help?

unchecking the box didn't help.
the device is set to use "device default" for the resolution / fps type". the "resolution" drop down is greyed out.
obs is set to output at 1460x822 (scaled down from 2560x1440).
i recently upgraded to the latest OBS, but this was an issue before and after. haven't yet tried a reinstall.

I ment the resolution of the webcam not obs sorry.
When you openup webcam properties in the scene inside obs.
There is an option to change the webcam's resolution.
If its to high the video could get stuck or the video wont pop up at all.

But i don't really think thats the issue.
Your camera might be already in use by a different program.

There are lights on the side of the webcam.
They glow blue if its turned on.

Are they blue when you open obs or close obs?

I'm not at home now, so I can't check the lights. I can say that before I was having the issue you describe, and the Logitech software reported some other program had the camera, even when OBS wasn't running. After I rebooted, that problem stopped. I can see the camera video in the Logitech config software now, so at least _that_ app can get the camera.

When I'm in OBS and I go in to configure the video capture device, I can see the video output of the camera in that window. I took that to mean that OBS can get access to the camera, but something is wrong in the scene. Which maybe isn't correct.

the resolution of the webcam is set to "device default." when OBS is not on, the lights are dark. when i start OBS, the blue lights come on. It must be something wrong with the scene i'm guessing?

i have deleted all the scenes and tried creating a new one and i get the same issue.

Well, it is working now but I can't say I know why.
Tried making an OBS scene with just the camera and no change.
I deleted the device and all scenes several times and no change.
I had tried rebooting several times but no change.
I did a Windows 10 update, and still no luck.
Tried installing the Windows 10 Camera app, and the download from the Windows Store errored out.
Downloaded Logitech's webcam app and _it_ couldn't connect to the camera, and noticed OBS was back to the camera not working at all even in preview mode.
Rebooted (which I seem to have to do when all the apps think something else has control of the camera but nothing does) and Windows reported an error on reboot, I think "Bad system configuration".
After another reboot, everything worked: the Logitech camera app, OBS preview, my OBS "camera only" scene, and my camera starting showing up in my "display capture" streaming scene.

So it is working, I have no idea why, and likely this isn't helpful to anyone, but leaving it here for posterity's sake. If I learn anything else, I will update hoping to save someone else the trouble.

Thanks for the update Leonc,

It might have been an update that solved the problem?
Who knows.

Well its solved now that is what counts.
I'm not familiar with c920 problems cause it happend to me as well.
I also fixed the problem with no clue what i exactly did.
So yeah quit same problems i gues haha.

Anyway have fun streaming / recording your games now it all works.

Would like to hear it when you did found the sollution that made your camera work properly again!

I think, the source was erroneously placed out of the obs screen. Source selection and Ctrl + R press can help in this case, as well, as info from the Transform options of the source.

I had the same issue and after hours of installing uninstalling reboot and updates a comment from 2018 saved me, thanks.

I solved my problem with Ctrl + R. However, I just created a single camera source, and had that problem. While it's minor, the fact that it was not placed on my scene might be a bug.

Thanks,
..Chad
